Repotting 101

Spring is a wonderful time, and for plant parents, it means the start of the repotting season! It is a great time to repot those plants that have managed to outgrow their pots. Most plants will need repotting every 1-2 years. We know this can be a little daunting if you've never done it before so we're here to help. Follow the steps in this guide and you will be totally fine.

Signs that your plant needs repotting

First of all, you need to know that your plant definitely needs repotting. There's a few signs to look out for.

  • Lots of roots protruding out of the pot
  • Roots protruding out the top of the pot
  • When removed from the pot, it's clear that the roots have ran out of room
  • Plant is very top heavy and toppling over

Step 1:

Find a pot to replace the current one. Plants really do not like to have too much room - most are totally happy to be root bound so avoid going up to a pot that is too much larger in size. Choose a pot that is roughly 2 inches larger in diameter than the current one. This helps prevent root rot because the soil doesn't remain waterlogged for too long.

Step 2:

Once you have your pot - gentle remove your plant from it's current pot. At this stage I prefer to loosen the roots slightly and get rid of some of the old soil. Most plants will be ok if you just plonk them straight in the new pot as they are but this is how my preferred method.

Step 3:

Next you want get your 'Perfect Potting Mix' which is our hand mixed soil made of coco coir, worm castings, perlite and bark - excellent drainage to help prevent root rot, or whatever soil you are using. Add some of the mixture to the bottom of your new pot so the roots have something to sit on.

Step 4:

Pop your plant on top and fill the rest up with more potting mix. Ta-dah! You have a freshly potted plant with lots of room to grow over the spring and summer.

Step 5:

After this is all done, I like to give the plant a good water (as long as it isn't suffering from root rot!) to help secure it in the soil - make sure you let the excess water drain away!
